The Deathbed Priority Test

“Weekend planning is a prime time to apply the Deathbed Priority Test: On your deathbed, will you wish you would spent more prime weekend hours grocery shopping or walking in the woods with your kids?” ~ Hal Borland

I am making a statement (without the fashionable benefit of a wordy tee)  that no house will be cleaned, no errands run, and you better believe the neighbor’s noses will wiggle with the scent of chocolate chip pancakes. No imperative list has to be made and checked through, no makeup, no lawn work, and afternoon naps with the little dude. Taking a breather can be the most productive effort made!

What are your plans this weekend?

Is there a minute for some rest, some play, some fresh air?

What will take life’s priority for you this lazy Saturday?

  1. Well, (stated in my Poppi voice), that depends. I find the old bicycle picture and the scary trees offensive! However your point is well made! Get up, get out, get going! Spring is around the corner, let’s GO!!!! Plant, groom, nurture, and tend are the lessons. What works in the garden works with our children!

  2. During the week, I am type “A” all the way. Yesterday I made a ton of food before 9 am. Saturday, I sleep in, and try to only do what I want. You have to rejuvenate if you want to be an overachiever.

    • Haha! Rejuvenate to be an overachiever…I LOVE IT! This is will be my new mantra when I need a break. Tori, you are only serving to be a better mom and floor-mopper by taking this nap :)

  3. Do-over birthday tea party for my now eight year old (Sob!). We were supposed to have it last week, but she got the flu. Then Sarah and Nathan go to a Daddy/Daughter Valentine Dance, while I go out and celebrate a friends birthday. Tomorrow, depending on the weather, will either be a lazy day at home reading books and playing outside, or a family trip to the movies. Considering that this weekend was supposed to be a full work weekend tech-ing my show (but that his been put off until next weekend) I think this is pretty awesome. Enjoy your weekend, you deserve it.

  4. I am taking the kid shopping and out to lunch while my wife sits and works on reports for her job all weekend…… the level of excitement in this house is OFF THE CHARTS!! Yay!! :)

  5. I like this post, because I recently quit grocery shopping on the weekends. Last night I baked chocolate chip cookies from scratch and today I walked along the river with my kids. I think Borland would be proud.

    • Definitely! I had formed the nasty habit of stockpiling errands for the weekends (the rare time when Dad could sit with Baby), but by the time the weekend was over I was pretty pooped and not at all ready for the new week at hand! A little rest is a MUST!

    • Haha! I took the baby to the playground (the first time he’s been able to play on his newly walking legs) and I am still smiling about it :) Glad you girls got to get out and have some fun!

  6. I’m planning my do nothing day for Wednesday. Not sure what I’m going to do- but I’ll be hanging out with the husband doing nothing (although he’ll probably try to make me get out and do something that involves physical activity).

I love that your dad comments from the same house. My mom does too!
